Composed of musicians from the thriving but neglected British hardcore scene (The Chisel, Big Cheese and many others), the Chubby and the Gang combine speed and energy with a blend of 1950s pop sounds. The result is a punchy take on the older, more melodic genres from which punk derives, chewed up and spat out mangled but revitalised. The line-up led by Charlie Manning Walker (aka Chubby Charles) and supported by Tom 'Razor' Hardwick, Meg Brooks Mills, Ethan Stahl e Joe McMahon (the Gang) tells stories of modern London. Most of the members of the quintet work in commerce or crafts, consequently their songs are really politics, and not just for fashion. Alongside classic rock and roll themes, Charlie's lyrics speak of workers' rights, inequality, police brutality, government failure and gentrification - issues intrinsic to the social fabric of the UK and even more amplified in the British capital. Despite these chaotic sources of inspiration, the music of the Chubby and the Gang is simple and accessible for a hardcore band. The debut album Speed Kills - produced by Jonah Falco of Fucked Up and first published in January 2020 by the British label DIY Static Shock - made his way into the local hardcore scene and then across the Atlantic, where he was greeted by an avalanche of critical acclaim from publications such as Pitchfork e Rolling Stone. It is a strange twist of fate that almost all of this happened during the pandemic, which prevented the band from playing live and interacting with its audience. This is set to change with the release of the second album The Mutt's Nuts scheduled for 27 August 2021 on Partisan Records.
