RICHARD HAWLEY's concert at the Milan Conservatory was a pleasant surprise, on 18 November. The latest crooner to gain deserved attention in our country, thanks to the release of his new album COLE'S CORNER (the first of his three to be published in Italy), RICHARD HAWLEY is rapidly gaining admirers with the poetry with which his songs are imbued, pure melody made up of slow reverberating arpeggios, twang guitars, brushed and jazzy snare drum carpets on which his warm and elegant white crooner voice is inserted. A concert of great class and atmosphere that will find in the Conservatorio's Sala Verdi the most suitable place to express itself at the highest level.
Hawley's career began in German beer halls in 1981, where he played R&B and learnt to never disdain work. One of his first gigs is as a guitarist for indie heroes Treebound Story. He later joined the Longpigs, moving on in 1998 to the Pulp "because I was the most ordinary person they knew," he says modestly. His solo career kicked off with a mini-album bearing his name in 2001. More recent engagements include producing some songs for Nancy Sinatra, who wanted him to join her on her UK and European tours this year, a series of live performances with his friend Jarvis Cocker and the rockabilly band The Feral Cats, and recovering from a nasty pleurisy.
In between the two periods, the realisation that the music he had always loved - whether it was Fats Domino, Bo Diddley, Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, Little Walter, or some other myth of the past - would be his salvation.
As is often the case, Hawley owes his quirks to his parents. The son of a Sheffield metalworker obsessed with Gene Vincent, Hawley grows up surrounded by rock and roll. His mother admits to singing with the Everley Brothers on the back steps of Sheffield City Hall, and his father gives him his first guitar lessons. In fact, Dad Dave can boast of having played with Eddie Cochran, among others.
