In September, Milan is set to welcome one of the bands that have made their mark in recent months, having recently released their second album 'Oh My God, Charlie Darwin'which was also released on 12 June in Italy.
I Low Anthem met during their university years in Providence, Rhode Island, and in 2003 decided to form a musical trio, which was soon noticed by Dave Marsh.
Jocie Adams is the female soul of the group, and she is also the one who gives a very important imprint to the compositions, being a multi-instrumentalist with a background in classical studies. The other two members are the frontman Ben Knox Miller and Jeff Prystowsky, fans of old records and the beat generation, so much so that they recently recorded a Kerouac lyric set to music by Tom Waits. After working their way up through the ranks in Rhode Island bars, where they carry around an inordinate number of instruments, their first record was released in 2007, 'What The Crow Brings'This was followed by an intense live activity, where they demonstrated all their musical skills. In 2008 came the second work 'Oh My God, Charlie Darwin'which was noticed by both the public and the trade press, to such an extent that the trio performed at South By Southwest in Austin, signing the next day for Bella Union, who produced the record in Europe. Knox is a folksinger who accompanies himself with an acoustic guitar and banjo, Prystowsky a jazz-trained bass player and Jocie the most versatile of the group, who can also play clarinets, horns and harps. This musical structure gives the songs a very distinctive sound, somewhere between folk-rock and blues, with echoes of Tom Waits, Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen (it is no coincidence that the band's manager is Jon Landau's daughter)defined by industry insiders as 'American sound'. Low Anthem are reminiscent in some ways of Wilco, Okkervil River and Fleet Foxes, and despite their traditional roots they retain an indie soul.
