It's hard to find another singer active today who has a background comparable to that of Lee Fieldsdebut in 1969, albums on thirteen different labels, and over 47 years in the music business. Supported by The Expressions and their soul, last November Lee Fields has published Special Night at Big Crown Records.
The album reflects the soul music that Lee Fields has always done with her gravelly but soft voice, but updating it and pushing the boundaries of what it has always been. The result is an unmistakable sound, something that, according to Pitchforkcannot be traced back specifically to Atlantic, Stax, Philadelphia International, Chess, Fame o Motown but it owes a lot to all of them. This is why no one would call this work a return to the past: it contains clues, sounds, feelings that might sound familiar, but it also has textures, themes and approaches that challenge the genre and take the sound in another direction, something decidedly different.
