Since 2011 he has been playing thehandpana special steel instrument that produces a harmonious and vibrant sound, and for his compositions he draws inspiration from Middle Eastern music, mixing the exotic with impeccable technique. David is an old acquaintance of Dead Can Dancein 2012 he was chosen as the band's session player and last year he released, in collaboration with Lisa Gerrard, the album Hiraeth (Besant Hall Records, 2018) appointed to the Grammy Awards 2019 such as Best New Age Album.
I Dead Can Danceor Lisa Gerrard e Brendan Perrywill present their album in Italy, Dionysus (PIAS, 2018), released last 2 November. Since its inception, the Australian duo has been intrigued by European folk traditions, not only in musical terms, but also in terms of secular, religious and spiritual practices. Dionysus unfolds in two acts through seven movements representing the different facets of the myth of the Greek god and his cult and takes the musical form of an oratorio, in 16th century style. As always, Brendan Perry drew inspiration from his natural surroundings to compose his music, in particular animal calls and the natural soundsrecreated here through folk instruments from all over the world.
