English avant/jazz-rock pioneers Soft Machine will soon be in Italy to celebrate their 50-year career: the date is for Friday 30 October 2020 at Spazio Teatro 89 in Milan. I tickets will be available on authorised platforms Ticketone e Vivaticket from 10am tomorrow, Friday 10 April.
From the first psychedelic performances on the same stages that hosted Syd Barrett and the Jimi Hendrix Experience to become one of the most famous European fusion bands, the music of the Soft Machine has influenced several generations of musicians and continues to be cited by contemporary experimentalists. The current line-up comprises three quarters of the legendary line-up that in 1975 recorded Softsjoined by saxophonist Theo Travis (Robert Fripp, David Gilmour, Gong). The band will perform both period material (compositions by Hugh Hopper, Mike Ratledge e Karl Jenkins) as well as contemporary works, including the most recent Hidden Details (2018) released exactly fifty years after its debut The Soft Machine (1968).
I Soft Machine are John Etheridge (guitar), Theo Travis (tenor sax, flute, keyboards), Roy Babbington (bass) and John Marshall (drums). Although the line-up has changed many times since the late 1960s, the spirit of the musical adventure of the Soft Machine and the ease with which the line-up ranges from powerful progressive jazz fusion to psychedelia via free jazz-rock improvisations to ambient music prevents them from being categorised, making them unique and contemporary.
