The Sisters Of Mercy formed in 1980 in Leeds, England, taking their name from the Sisters of Mercy (sisters of mercy), the prostitutes in the song of the same name by Leonard Cohen: "We liked the ambiguity between the original meaning of the expression, which referred to an order of nuns, and that adopted by Cohen". explains the singer Andrew Eldritch.
