Hey, I am Shawn James.
I have met too many journalists who thought they could summarise and convey what I talk about by extrapolating it from an hour-long conversation so they could write my 'biography'. To hell with them, I'll put it in my own words.
I was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. I lived on the south side of the city, where I attended a gospel church. I have always been surrounded by sincere, heartfelt music and hardworking, real, down-to-earth people. Although I no longer follow any religion, I appreciate those times and the way they shaped me and I remain who I am now.
I have moved around a lot and lived in all different parts of the United States. I have developed my sound after absorbing so many different cultures, from my own country as well as from the rest of the world.
I started releasing my music in 2012 and haven't stopped since. I play many genres, from folk to blues, R&B, gospel, rock, metal and many things in between. The fundamental constant that unites these styles is that it is all done with emotion, feeling, heart and a lot of soul. I mean it, and I deeply feel what I play.
Sometimes I play covers of songs I like, and although some people might know me for those alone, I am certainly not just a cover artist.
If you come to see me play live and expect only one style or side of what I do, you might be disappointed to learn that my shows are a rollercoaster of emotions, musical styles, intensity and energy. I get bored easily and love to mix things up. Be prepared and bring earplugs just in case.
I have always been the underdog, so to speak, as I have never had the support of big record labels, marketing or PR companies and I really like being that way. I feel I've earned what I have through hard work, determination, a lot of luck and the great relationships I've made with the people I've met along the way. Living within the music industry I have learnt a lot of lessons the hard way, and that is good enough for me. I have seen that with your support (of you, the listeners out there) I can achieve my wildest dreams.
