After the excellent attendance figures recorded in the first opening period, the exhibition 'Gateway To Space" is enriched with a new unmissable space memorabilia: the LUNAR ROVER, the vehicle built by NASA to explore the Moon, previously only on public display at the NASA MarshallSpace Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama.
The Lunar Roving Vehicle (LRV) was designed to operate in weightlessness and be able to negotiate the lunar surface. Three LRVs have been flown by astronauts on Apollo space missions. Each vehicle was used for three crossings, one per day for the three days of each mission, and all three remained on the Moon. The Lunar Rover was designed in 17 months and completed its work on the Moon without a single anomaly, allowing the astronauts to explore areas that would have been impossible to reach without a vehicle. According to Apollo 17 crew member Harrison Schmitt, 'The Lunar Rover proved to be as reliable, safe and versatile as we expected. Without this vehicle, the greatest scientific discoveries of the Apollo 15, 16 and 17 missions would not have been possible and our knowledge of the Moon's evolution would still be very limited'.
The exhibition 'Gateway To Space"open until August at the Udine Fairbrings the instruments and technology of space exploration to Europe for the first time. In addition to the wonder and drama aroused by the tale of these human endeavours, the exhibition presents an extraordinary collection of instruments and artefacts from the US Space & Rocket Centre NASA and the spacecraft that realised one of mankind's oldest dreams.
GATEWAY TO SPACEwith its impressive collection of rockets and space memorabilia, provides a unique opportunity to learn about the multifaceted world of science and space exploration. Visitors will have the opportunity to get up close to space stations, original particles from the cosmos and other planets, pieces and models of satellites, clothing and accessories, and even meteorite particles. A noteworthy detail is that many pieces are on public display for the first time in the exhibition.
