With the acclaimed 'Gentle Spirit" of 2011, and with its 2013 follow-up "Fanfares', the whole world became aware of the prodigious talent of the unrivalled singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, producer and guitar hero Jonathan Wilson. After the triumphant performances in Milan and Bologna last summer, the Californian musician is back in Italy for a tour of theatres, which will see him on the 11 April in Bologna at the Teatro Antonianothe 12 April in Rome at the Auditorium Parco della Musica / Sala Sinopoli and the 13 April in Milan at Teatro Menotti.
The modern, revisited reinterpretation of the "Laurel Canyon sound' by 'Gentle Spirit"earned the disc high rankings in many critics' charts in late 2011, including those of MOJO (#4), Uncut (#16), and The Guardian (#28). Both BBC Music which NME gave the disc a rating of 8 out of 10 stars. The highly anticipated follow-up to 'Gentle Spirit", "Fanfares' from 2013, is an ambitious production of grandiose epic rock that follows in the footsteps of 'Pacific Ocean Blue', the '77 solo album by Dennis Wilson of the Beach Boys.
In the words of the same Jonathan Wilson, " 'Fanfare' is a word that represents an eccentric performance, a cheeky movement of energy, a celebration of sound. Something that announces an arrival, a special occasion. A fanfare follows no rules. In this case, 'Fanfare' is also the opening track, the gateway to the rest of the record'.
Recorded by the musician on analogue tape in his Fivestar Studios in Echo Park (L.A.), then mixed in the Groove Masters Studio by Jackson Browne in Santa Monica, the disc reflects the maniacal care and attention to detail that is typical of a sound craftsman of the calibre of Wilson. There are many instruments that contribute to delineating the ever-changing soundscapes, suspended between folk, progressive, psychedelia and film music of "Fanfares"strings, woodwinds, an entire orchestra in some tracks, a Steinway piano and the ever-present guitars to create intriguing virtuosic games. There are also numerous illustrious names that grace this work as guests: among them, some fundamental protagonists of the 70s Californian rock scene, such as Graham Nash, David Crosby e Jackson Browne.
