La Hawke speaks thus about his album:
"This album is called Moss (musk) because I think I have been doing a lot of thinking over the last few years, sitting still and developing a green blanket of memories and feelings. Recording this record was like getting up, shaking it all off and observing. It was the first step to clear my head and really try to look at the stone under the moss. I don't know how many steps I am still missing, or where I am at, but I do know that this album is a big gear change.
Songs have always come into my life out of necessity. I think each song on this record is about a beginning hidden behind an end, a reflection on the ways in which I have let myself down.
The album opens with Backup Plan... I think being myself completely and freely was, stupidly, my plan B. If I couldn't be the person I pretended to be, if I could stop wanting the things I pretended to want, only then could I allow myself to be who I really am.
Then came Thérèse e Mermaid Bar. The first is inspired by a painting but is about feeling locked up and stuck, like a version of yourself that someone else has created. The second is about a girl who tries to end her life by throwing herself into the Hudson River, but becomes a mermaid who runs a restaurant for all the creatures hiding at the bottom of the sea.
Bloomed Into Blue was originally a poem I had written with a friend in high school, entitled B-Word Muse. It was a tribute to the muses: Ariel, Edie Sedgwick, Maria Teresa, and many others. Women have always been the subject of art, not those who create it. Worthy to be discussed, but not to be listened to.
This record comes to terms with my childhood in Sweet Tooth e Driverswith regret in Luna Moth, Crazy Kid e Sticky Little Wordsand with anger in South Elroy, Restless Moon e Over.
Mainly, this album is about rebirth and acceptance.
I am becoming myself again.
Thank you for listening to me."
