The Flaming Lips are an American rock band, formed in Oklahoma City in 1983 and revolving around the charismatic figure of leader Wayne Coyne, who founded them after stealing musical instruments from a church. The group is known for its psychedelic arrangements and bizarre lyrics, as well as strange album and song titles, such as Pilot Can at the Queer of God, Talkin' 'Bout the Smiling Deathporn Immortality Blues (Everyone Wants to Live Forever), Free Radicals (A Hallucination of the Christmas Skeleton Pleading with a Suicide Bomber) e Yeah, I Know It's a Drag... But Wastin' Pigs Is Still Radical. Their live performances are quite unusual: they feature people dressed in animal costumes, balloons, puppets, video projections, an intricate configuration of stage lights, giant hands, a large amount of confetti, and a man-sized plastic bubble with which Wayne Coyne crosses the audience. In 2002, Q Magazine listed them as one of the '50 Bands to See Before You Die'.. Founded as an alternative rock band, the group recorded many albums and EPs for an independent label in the 1980s and early 1990s. After signing a contract with Warner Bros. Records, the She Don't Use Jelly unexpectedly became a hit. Although this was their only success in the United States, the group always received positive reviews and, albeit to a lesser extent, good commercial success, as in the case of the album The Soft Bulletin of 1999, which inaugurated the second phase of their career (more oriented towards psychedelia and pop) and was voted 'Album of the Year' by the New Musical Express, and with Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots of 2002. The group has had more commercial success in the UK and Europe than in their home country. In February 2007, they were nominated for a BRIT Award in the category 'Best International Act'. By 2007 they had won three Grammy Awards, including two for 'Best Rock Instrumental Performance'.
