An Oscar story that of RODRIGUEZthe legendary Mexican-born singer-songwriter is
a self-taught musician from America's post-war working class. He has
began playing during the 1960s in bars and clubs in Detroit, USA, before the well-known
Michigan's capital city began its post-industrial urban decline. In Detroit itself
Rodriguez recorded 'Cold Fact' (1969) and 'Coming From Reality' (1971). The two epochal
Rodriguez's records at the time were not noticed by the American public and critics, and the artist left
temporarily resume his career as a musician by resuming his studies in philosophy at Wayne
State University of Detroit and continuing to work as a construction worker to help
his family financially. Also worth mentioning are his participations in the 1970s and 1980s
in the Detroit municipal elections, without attaining the position of mayor.
In the mid-1970s Rodriguez's songs were a huge hit on Australian radio stations
and New Zealanders, so much so that Sixto embarked on a successful tour of the continent
Oceanic. Rodriguez, however, was still unaware of the rock star status he had
achieved in South Africa, where he had become famous on the level of rock icons such as Bob
Dylan, Jimi Hendrix e Jim Morrison of Doors. Given the scarcity of information on its
life in South Africa, news began to circulate that Rodriguez was dead, even that he was
committed suicide by shooting himself on stage during a performance. The anti-Apartheid movement and
many South African musicians were inspired by the profound lyrics of Rodriguez's songs and the
his songs became veritable anthems against the regime of racial segregation in the
country. In the late 1990s, Rodriguez was finally called up for a tour in South Africa
helping the rebirth of its myth and immortal generational anthems. The life story of
Sixto and his incredible relationship with South Africa is recounted in the winning documentary
of an Oscar for 'Searching For Sugar Man' (Academy Award for Best Documentary).
Searching For Sugar Man' gave Rodriguez fame in the states and the rest of the world,
helping to reach an international audience.
Rodriguez now tours not only in South Africa, Australia and New Zealand, but
also in Europe and the USA where it has found a new generation of passionate listeners
of his music and his incredible story. The two albums 'Cold Fact' and 'Coming From Reality'
were reissued by Light in the Attic (distributed in Italy by Goodfellas -
www.goodfellas.it) and the soundtrack 'Searching For Sugar Man' was released by the
Sony Legacy.
Rodriguez's is one of the most incredible and exciting stories related to the world of
music, passion, poverty and artistic redemption. Sixto Rodriguez has now conquered the
rightful place in the history of modern music, with a career that
no one will ever forget.
Rodriguez, one of the greatest American authors of the last 40 years, perhaps the greatest,
