The English band formed by Peter Hammill (voice, guitar and piano), Guy Evans (drums) and Hugh Banton (keyboards, electric bass, guitar) was born in 1967 in Manchester. At the end of the 60s they began to make their way with their own very particular musical vision, completely unclassifiable, with elements of jazz, electronic, classical, blues and soul music that they completely transformed, playing experimental music in the widest possible sense of the term. The band is a rock quartet, but without guitars, using instead instruments such as organ, flute, saxophone and piano, modified to produce sounds that are then enhanced with sophisticated overdubbing effects. Albums such as Pawn Hearts (Charisma Records, 1971) e Still Life (Charisma Records, 1976) best capture the essence of a band that nevertheless expresses itself best in the live dimension.
