Vince Staples has come a long way since his early days in music in Long Beach, Ramona Park, California. With her debut album, Summertime '06 in 2015, the then 20-year-old saw his life change dramatically, going from feeling trapped to complete artistic freedom. But appearances are deceiving, as his most recent project suggests, Big Fish Theory. The album delves into the confusion of sudden fame, telling of a lifestyle antithetical to the one known in Long Beach - forged on gang violence and poverty. It is the typical hip hop background, within which rappers have always found a way to live. Vince Staples produces a brutal, stylish, playful and despondent vision all in one breath.
This is the nature of his music, self and socially conscious and comical at the same time. With Prima Donnae Summertime '06 behind him, Staples has given voice to what is yet to be. He is a prominent rapper in today's hip hop world, keeping his sound anchored in his West Coast roots and delivering a message without boundaries.
