1/3/10: AN ICON OF AFRO-AMERICAN MUSIC: GIL SCOTT-HERON IN ITALY IN APRIL

A true icon of African-American music, GIL SCOTT-HERON will be in Milan on 28 April in concert at the Conservatorio with his four-piece band.

The concept of 'forerunner' finds few more fitting examples than that of GIL SCOTT-HERON, when one considers what this artist was to black music from the late 1960s onwards: poet, musician and author, he made a name for himself early in his career as a 'spoken word soul performer' and thanks to his successful collaboration with Brian Jackson has become a reference point for the jazz, blues and soul scene in just a few years. Out of this collaboration came albums such as 'Pieces of a Man' and 'Winter' that influenced and shaped genres such as hip hop and soul.

His style has been defined 'proto rap' precisely because of the incredible anticipation with which Gil sensed the future of black music.

Coming to Italy after the release of the latest album "I'm new here"which includes the brand new single 'Me and the Devil'which was released on 22 February in the US.

'I'm new here' is not just another album, as it marks Gil Scott-Heron's return to the scene after a nine-year hiatus mainly due to the two years he spent in prison (2007 and 2008) for drug possession.
