15/04/09: THE POWER OF INDIA.ARIE MUSIC COMES TO MILAN ON 30 OCTOBER

Music and politics, music and society, music and life. Rarely do these binomials take on meaning as decisively as they do in the music of India.Arie.
Since the release of his first real single "Video" and the multi-platinum debut album Acoustic Soul in 2001, India's music has created an extraordinary bond of trust, affection and communication with her fans. Her second record, the platinum Voyage to India of 2002, is critically acclaimed worldwide. The New York Times calls it "music that amplifies her reputation as an artist of substance; her acoustic guitar and confident but measured voice recall soul masters like Stevie Wonder and Roberta Flack." In 2006 India released her album Testimony: Vol.1, Love & Relationship which reached number one in the charts: a beautiful collection of songs much appreciated by fans for its intimate and touching portrayal of the farewell of a love affair and the suffering that ensues.
Although discreet, the political stance of India.Arie's Grammy award-winning music has always been prominent, especially since Oprah Winfrey thanked her for writing 'I may not be built like a supermodel/But I've learned to love myself unconditionally' - a declaration of independence from an agenda that, eight years later, is still as politically decisive as any protest song. Winfrey also described the song 'There's Hope' from Testimony: Vol. 1 as a 'music that stirs and enlivens the soul,'; India's music was also featured on buses and planes, rallies and fundraisers during the historic presidential race of Barack Obama.
His new album is Testimony: Vol. 2, Love & Politics and is, as always, a penetrating, honest, insightful and creatively accomplished expression of the inner emotionality and interconnectedness that exists between us all. India adds that it is a reflection of the changes - his and ours. "There is now nothing in actions or words that can be separated from other people," she observes. "Now you can have the whole world in your laptop, you are instantly part of the world. Bringing topics of conversation, that's politics. Politics is what happens when a group of people come together and separate themselves from others. Much of my album is about how we define ourselves and isolate ourselves. I travel the world and I know that people talk about all these things. The album deals with these themes."
