Rodrigo y Gabriela's recording career began in 2003 with Re-Foc, followed a year later by Live in Manchester and Dublin, an album that tried to recreate the magical atmosphere of their concerts, which were and remain the couple's strong point. In 2005, the contact was made to record their second studio album. Accustomed to working alone, they first refused to submit themselves to the dictates of a producer, as advised by the record company, and fled to Mexico to jot down some ideas. Upon their return, however, they started collaborating with the legendary John Leckie (Stone Roses, Verve, Radiohead, Kula Shaker). Leckie gave the two guitarists complete freedom of expression and the result is an absolutely unique record.
Abandoning strident metal sounds to harness two classical guitars, Rodrigo y Gabriela exude a breathtaking energy. Their music is an experience where the old and the new coexist and complement each other; the nine tracks that make up their latest album (2006) mix the spirituality of Mexican tradition with the frenzy of today's reality. The two Mexicans have not forgotten their musical roots and in fact on the disc they do not fail to pay homage to two bands that have been their bread and butter for years, Led Zeppelin and Metallica. The reinterpretation of Stairway to Heaven is both faithful and innovative, while Orion takes on almost epic connotations.
