BELLY DANCING IN MILAN

23, 24 and 25 September: three dates at Milan's Teatro Smeraldo for the world's most sensual and popular belly dance show, the Bellydance Superstars. Perhaps to speak of belly dancing might be reductive for an enthralling show that perfectly mixes oriental and Egyptian music, clever hints of jazz, and tribal atmospheres.

Belly Dance Superstars, the new 'feat' of that Miles Copeland former manager of the Police, then of Sting and now also of a belly-dancing troupe! He himself, mindful of his past glories in the music business, speaking of the show in the States said, 'It reminds me of the second tour of the Police, when everybody could see that something was happening, and they all wanted to get on the band-wagon' .

Specifically, the troupe boasts some of the world's best dancers from Brazil, United States e Argentina. It counted more than 12 women who - for the show that took place in the States - travelled on a tour bus, tackling a calendar of 60 dates spread over nine weeks. Many combined this 'temporary' activity with seminars held in some of the cities on the tour. The pace to which the dancers were subjected was truly exhausting: 600 km a day travelled by bus to reach the tour location, eating at service stations. 2 hours or so of show, once the destination was reached, and 5 or 6 hours to sleep. Then straight back to the start.

The music played during the show is mostly recorded, and includes songs by the artists Hakim, Oojami and Amr Diabbut the percussionist's live performance is often used during the performance Wassan Pharaoon.
So it seems to be a winning formula, that of the Bellydance Superstars, which makes use of the ancient art of dance to enhance femininity through the scaffolding of a show that includes a variety of solo and group performances ranging from cabaret to tribal, jazz and Egyptian dance.
