Live performance has always been a fundamental part of the world of Grateful Dead, who in 1972 had decided to record the shows of their European tour probably not imagining that these recordings would become the band's live landmark, the triple live album known as Europe '72.
La Dark Star Orchestra announces celebrations for the 50 years of that revolutionary 1972 European tour. That sacred music will resonate again in venues and theatres across the continent from 13 to 25 September 2022, and each show will be a faithful recreation of one of the historic stops on the '72 European tour. The itinerary will run from London to Paris, from Germany to Italy, offering a hyper-accurate version of the show to an entirely new audience each night. The European tour itinerary encompasses four of the cities featured on the historic tour, including Paris, which will see the line-up on the same stage as L'Olimpia on which the Grateful Dead performed on 3 May 1972.
Before heading to the old continent, theEurope '72 will kick off in the US, with a performance of the 8 April 1972 show at London's Wembley Empire Pool - now Wembley Arena - at the Skull & Roses Festival in Ventura, California, exactly fifty years later. In addition, on 13 May the band will perform the Deadin Lille to the Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, New York. During these two performances the band's guitarist, Jeff Matesonhe will harness the legendary Alligator by Jerry Garcia, a 1955 Fender Stratocaster originally used on the '72 tour.
