Hiatus Kaiyote is a reality that defies definition. In just two years, the band revolving around the charismatic figure of frontwoman Nai Palm has come to the attention of insiders thanks to a hypnotic blend of future soul, funk, jazz forays and flashes of electronics, post-rock digressions and ethno-folk suggestions.
The Melbourne, Australia-based line-up comes to Italy for the first time on 26 November at the Circolo Magnolia in Segrate (MI) to present their debut album 'Tawk Tomahawk"released in July 2013 by Flying Buddha (Sony).Opening was the Milanese nu funk collective Black Beat Movement.
After the concert, dj-set by Turbojazz & Parker Madicine (CT-HI Records).
Hiatus Kaiyote was born from the meeting of three musicians from the local scene - bassist Paul Benderthe multi-instrumentalist Perrin Moss and the keyboardist Simon Mavin - with the singer Nai Palman eclectic and unconventional character. A spiritual understanding was immediately established between the band members, which led them to compose intuitively, resulting in an organic and multifaceted sound, where different rhythms overlap, intertwining with the melodies traced by Nai Palm's unique and nuanced voice.
Among the admirers of Hiatus Kaiyote include illustrious names such as the DJ and discographer Gilles Petersonmusicians Taylor McFerrin e Questlove and the singer Erykah Badu (to whom Nai Palm has often been compared for her vocal qualities). It is no coincidence that Sony Music bet on them by reissuing the band's first work 'Tawk Tomahawk"originally self-produced, for the Flying Buddha Records sub-label, with the addition of a extra version of the single 'Nakamarra' made in collaboration with American rapper Q-Tip.
The song 'Nakamarra', named after the typical red earth of the wide open, unspoilt spaces of the group's homeland, is a tribute to the power of nature and a proud celebration of their identity.
