With the album 'Release The Stars' out, the fifth of his career, one of the most creative and versatile artists on the international scene comes to Italy. RUFUS WAINWRIGHT returns to focus solely on his solo project, after having provided the vocals for the soundtrack of the controversial film 'Brokeback Mountain' and later participated in the production of the record by Antony & the Johnsons entitled 'I'm a bird now'.
Two dates in the heart of summer: after the concert at the Velvet Club in Rimini on 15 July, Rufus Wainwright will star in a 'double billing' together with L'AURAwho on 8 June releases his second album Demian. The 16 July in the wonderful setting of the Vittoriale in Gardone Riviera in the province of Brescia, the concert by Rufus and L'aura will be a meeting of two creative minds and two artists of great depth.
Rufus Wainwright was born in 1973 to excellent parents: singer-songwriter Loudon III and folk singer Kate McGarrigle (one half of the McGarrigle Sisters). However, the two divorced a few years after his birth. He started playing music at a young age and publicly declared his homosexuality as a teenager. After his apprenticeship on the Montreal music circuit, his first contact with the record industry came thanks to his father, who passed on one of his demos to Van Dyke Parks (a historic producer/arranger on the Californian circuit), who in turn passed it on to the head of Dreamworks, Lenny Waronker. Thus, in 1998 RUFUS WAINWRIGHT was released, followed three years later by POSES, both critically acclaimed for their mixture of Tin Pan Alley folk song and modern pop. In 2003, WANT ONE was released, produced by Marius De Vries (already working with Bjork). At the end of 2004 (in Europe at the beginning of 2005), WANT TWO was released, a new record of unreleased songs recorded in the same sessions as its (almost) eponymous predecessor. The two records brought some notoriety to the ambitious Rufus, who already had a new work in mind: for the direction of Sam Mendes ('American Beauty'), he revisited the famous Carnegie Hall concert given by Judy Garland in 1961, and the release of a live album extracted from the show is already planned for autumn 2007. Although many of his most emotional songs feature Wainwright alone on piano, many of his compositions boast complex arrangements and harmonies with hundreds of individual parts. Wainwright is a fan of opera, and this is evident in his influences; his music has been called 'Popera' or 'Baroque pop'. The lyrics are full of allusions to opera, literature, pop culture, and, recently, politics (in songs like 'Gay Messiah' or 'Waiting for a Dream').
Following the success of 'Okumuki', Demian, the second album by The Aurawhich contains thirteen tracks, some sung in Italian, others in English. The album is particularly nuanced, with frequent changes of register, ranging from the strong tones of rock to the more delicate tones of ballads and jazz. The first single 'Non è una favola' (It's not a fairy tale) ironically points the finger at the neuroses of certain characters of the star system who make their gilded life a trap of unhappiness.
The concert at the Vittoriale with Rufus Wainwright is for L'aura one of the few summer appointments with the public, before a series of concerts that will see her perform throughout Italy in the autumn.
